Baby Bedding Sets and Newborn Protection
So you’ve bought the crib – congratulations! But now you must be wondering what bedding you’re going to put in it. A big portion of crib sets contain 3 to 6 pieces, but how many of those do you actually need? The most up-to-date recommendation for crib bedding is to use sheets only, and keep other bedding out. If you’re on a tight budget, you’re much better off spending your money on a few high-quality crib sheets than on a bedding set that can’t be used for much more than decoration.
Quilts and crib bumper pads both pose a risk of suffocation, so use them for decoration or just don’t use them. If you’re worried about baby getting to cold, put on some warm pajamas or a swaddling blankets instead. Wearable blankets are sort of like a cross between clothing and a sleeping bag. As swaddling has surged in popularity over the past decade, innovative new products have emerged that help in getting a customized fit. Because it is similar to the tight space of the womb, many new babies find swaddling comforting. If you rock your baby a lot, you might still want a quilt or blanket to wrap around him or her. But remove the comforter before baby goes into the crib.
A foam sleep wedge might seem like a good idea, since it is meant to reduce a newborn’s risk of SIDS. Keep in mind, though, that babies can’t roll over until they are about 6 months old, at which point tummy-sleeping no longer seems to cause the same risk of SIDS. As was already mentioned, any soft crib bedding should be removed from the crib, but the foam wedges are themselves a type of soft bedding.
Bedding sets are more than just quilts and bumper pads, though. They often include things like wall hangings, window valances, and even a mobile. While these add tremendously to the look of the nursery, they are quite honestly not needed.
But most parents are going to want a bedding set anyway, just for the look of the nursery. In this case, try gender neutral crib bedding like a Hot Cocoa baby bedding set. {It’s much more cost effective because you can use it again and again, regardless of the sex of your next baby.}
